Cashback: how to work out its real value
5% of losses and 5% of turnover are different things. How to tell them apart and why cashback does not make play “free”.
Cashback returns part of your losses. It is easy to see it as insurance, but the maths is simpler and harsher.
What it is calculated on
There are two variants. The first is net loss over the period: you deposited 1,000 UAH, won back 600 UAH, lost 400 UAH; 10% cashback is 40 UAH. The second is turnover: you get a percentage of all bets placed, which looks smaller but steadier. Check which one the rules use.
The real value
Suppose you lost 2,000 UAH this week. 8% cashback is 160 UAH. With x10 wagering you must turn it over for 1,600 UAH. At a 4% house edge the expected cost of that turnover is 64 UAH, so on average about 96 of the 160 UAH remain. Cashback returns part of the loss but does not erase it.
Traps
- Credit only for certain games or days.
- A minimum loss threshold to qualify.
- A cap on the maximum cashback amount.
- Forfeiting cashback if another bonus was taken earlier.
When cashback is worth taking
If you play regularly anyway, cashback is the most transparent bonus in the ranking: low wagering, few conditions. If you play once a month it makes no sense. Compare it with the welcome package in the article on the maths of a bonus.
